A combination of the striking use of color, diving motion, canvas size and format, are what sets apart this painting of a trophy Lake Trout from other folk painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The work is signed and notated in the following manner:
9 Lb. Laker or Togue Caught in South Pond, September 26th, 1939 by L.A. Tirrell
At least one other paintings is known by Tirrell. It sold at Skinner auction house a number of years ago in the $20k range.
The work is painted on canvas, laid over wooden panel, with breadboard ends to prevent warping. This was installed in a frame that was made and painted by Tirrell. |
