A Fine late 18th Century Massive Gilded Carved Wood Eagle, Southern European, Probably Italian.
The eagle stands with wings outstretched and head turned downward; it was meant to be raised above the viewers. Based on the method of carving, it was probably a lectern. It features a strong and rather robust body and feet resting on a rock. The eagle is a long standing symbol of Lombardy, a region in Northern Italy containing Milan, Mantua and Bergamo, among other cities.
The eagle is also a symbol of St. John the Evangelist, an allegory depicting the heights to which both he and his gospel attained. It was an extremely popular symbol, and often used on lecterns. |
