M-10892: (Image: 12 x 18’’) “IERUSALEM” Rotterdam: Daniel Stoopendaal, c. 1680 - 1720. Original engraved map with later hand-coloring. Very strong, clear engraving. Some separation at folds archivally rejoined.
This map originally appeared in a Dutch Bible and depicts the city plan of ancient Jerusalem. The nine square courtyards seen within the Temple court are based on Juan Bautista Villalpando’s interpretation of Ezekiel’s prophecy of a Third Holy Temple. Surrounding the city walls are the encampments of the armies that besieged Jerusalem throughout the course of history. Nine view panels surround the map, including the Temple of Solomon, the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacle, Solomon and the High Priest. |
