A-988:  AUDUBON, John James. The BIRDS OF AMERICA, from Drawings made in the United States and their Territories.

New York: J. J. Audubon and Philadelphia: J. B. Chevalier. 1840-44. Seven volumes. Royal octavo. Contemporary full leather binding - full navy morocco, gilt lettering on spine.

First American edition of the most famous of all American ornithological works: the ONLY American edition produced under John James Audubon's personal supervision. Lithography and coloring by J. T. Bowen - the finest lithographer and colorist of the period. Contains 500 hand-colored lithographed plates, including 17 species not illustrated in the Elephant folio. Subscribed edition with only approximately 1050 sets completed.

Binding in fine condition -- Plates very clean and beautifully colored. A SUPERB set!
